Accent plantings as part of a bonsai display are referred to as shitakusa, translated as “undergrass”. The shitakusa is an integral part of the bonsai display and will reflect the type of tree, the natural environment of the tree and the time of year.
The same choice of plants can be used to form a display in its own right. This way of displaying plants is refereed to as kusamono, translated as “grass thing”. The choice of plants will reflect the time of year and the setting of the kusamono.
The choice of pot for both shitakusa and kusamono is an important part of the display, they should compliment the planting and be in harmony with the overall display.
